Thanks to our sister organization and valued partner, Habait Shel Bar, for inviting us to speak at their medical conference for oncology social workers and nurses who work with women facing gynecological malignancies. The event was attended by a few dozen oncology care professionals from Israel’s HMOs and hospitals, as well as medical company representatives.

Lemonade Fund COO Yael Levy addressed the gathering as part of an important session on patient support. The rich program covered important, and diverse topics in gynecological cancers, such as nursing care, new treatment, self-care for caregivers, dealing with treatment side effects and early menopause and career development challenges in the face of a serious illness. 

Thanks to Bar Levy (no relation!), founder and CEO of Habait She Bar for the invitation and continued cooperation to help patients together with a holistic and professional basket of support and services.

Every year Nefesh B’Nefesh honors Olim (immigrants) from English-speaking countries who have made a significant impact on Israeli society. Lemonade Fund founder Shari Mendes was presented the Sylvan Adams Bonei Zion Award for Community & Non-Profit at the 10th Annual ceremony, held at a gala event in Jerusalem on December 3, 2024, alongside 11 other outstanding immigrants who have strengthened Israeli society and advanced Zionist values across fields such as education, culture, arts and sports, science and medicine, and global impact.

Recognized for her incredible work that has changed countless lives, offering hope to breast cancer patients in their hardest moments, this celebration of her legacy offers hope and a brighter, healthier future for so many.

The Israel Lemonade Fund mourns our fallen today, one year after that fateful day, October 7, 2023.

We are praying for the safe return of our hostages, the safety of our soldiers and the protection of our people. We will prevail in the face of challenges, we are a strong people.

The Lemonade Fund was proud to participate in the inaugural ALL.CAN Conference in Tel Aviv, bringing all of Israel’s  cancer-related non-profits, volunteer groups, professionals and stakeholders all under one roof to discuss collaboration and share collective knowledge. We look forward to participating in more events like these and continued cooperation and collaboration with the wonderful organizations we met and worked with  – to shape and support the future of cancer care in Israel.

Linda Sherrington, Lemonade Fund COO who, together with her staff, works closely with hospital and community social workers to process grant applications, was invited to speak to Assuta Medical Centers’ social workers on January 4. The meeting was hosted by Assuta Medical Center in Ramat Hachayal, and included social workers from Assuta Hospitals across Israel – from Beer Sheva to Haifa.

Linda heard from the group how grateful they are for the Lemonade Fund’s support for their patients, and their eagerness to support our efforts, with testimonials and video interviews. They were particularly enthusiastic about the upcoming transition to a digital application process that will hopefully help them reach even more patients in need. Social Workers from various departments explained how accompanying illnesses affect breast cancer patients and how a holistic approach to helping them medically and financially is so important. Thanks to Dr. Julia Gouzman, Director of Social Work Services Department at Assuta Medical Centers and her colleagues for such a productive, and pleasant, gathering.

Soon after the war began on October 7, 2023, the Lemonade Fund immediately launched an emergency fund for wartime grants (NIS 1800 each) to ensure support for uninterrupted oncology care and to fill the gap until government agencies are operating fully.

This emergency fund, with an expedited application process, supported cancer patients who suddenly found themselves in acute economic hardship 

133 Wartime Emergency Grants were sent from October 18-November 9

NIS 1800 ($465) x 133 grants = NIS 239,240 ($61,845)

How We Helped

• Funds for transporting patients who were evacuated from their homes, who were now far from treatment centers

• Childcare for those whose family members were drafted

• Income supplementation for lost income due to war

• Other emergency assistance as outlined by social workers

We thank you for coming to the aid of the most urgent cases of acute economic distress following the terrible attack on Israel on October 7th. 

Who we helped

These are just two examples of the 150+ applications from social workers we processed:

E., a 43-year old divorced ovarian cancer patient in active treatment, was left alone at home on the northern border when her two children, who used to accompany her to treatments, were drafted . With no way to get to her treatments, an Israel Lemonade Fund emergency war grant helps pay for taxi rides to the hospital.

R. is a 75-year old widow from Sderot being treated for endometrial cancer. She was evacuated with only the clothes on her back. She is traumatized by the rockets and afraid of what lies ahead, when, and if, she can return home. A Lemonade Fund emergency war grant is helping her purchase basic items, and pay for transportation to the hospital for treatment since she has been evacuated to a safer location.

Knowing that the war is far from over, we will now shift to assisting the war effort by allocating additional funding to Lemonade Fund applicants who have suffered financial impact caused by war.
