Ensuring Uninterrupted Access to Oncology Treatments

Soon after the war began on October 7, 2023, the Lemonade Fund immediately launched an emergency fund for wartime grants (NIS 1800 each) to ensure support for uninterrupted oncology care and to fill the gap until government agencies are operating fully.

This emergency fund, with an expedited application process, supported cancer patients who suddenly found themselves in acute economic hardship

133 Wartime Emergency Grants were sent from October 18-November 9

NIS 1800 ($465) x 133 grants = NIS 239,400 ($61,845)

How We Helped

Funds for transporting patients who were evacuated from their homes, who were now far from treatment centers

Childcare for those whose family members were drafted

Income supplementation for lost income due to war

Other emergency assistance as outlined by social workers

We thank you for donating to aid the most urgent cases of acute economic distress following the terrible attack on Israel on October 7th.

Who we helped

These are just two examples of the 150+ applications from social workers we processed:

E., a 43-year old divorced ovarian cancer patient in active treatment, was left alone at home on the northern border when her two children, who used to accompany her to treatments, were drafted . With no way to get to her treatments, an Israel Lemonade Fund emergency war grant helps pay for taxi rides to the hospital.

R. is a 75-year old widow from Sderot being treated for endometrial cancer. She was evacuated with only the clothes on her back. She is traumatized by the rockets and afraid of what lies ahead, when, and if, she can return home. A Lemonade Fund emergency war grant is helping her purchase basic items, and pay for transportation to the hospital for treatment since she has been evacuated to a safer location.

Knowing that the war is far from over, we will now shift to assisting the war effort by allocating additional funding to Lemonade Fund applicants who have suffered financial impact caused by war.

Please partner with us to keep oncological care uninterrupted during this challenging time. Thank you.

Please stand with us to come to their aid.

A donor has generously offered to cover the costs of running this program – 100% of your donation will go directly to fund grants.

Empowering the Periphery

The Lemonade Fund Empowering the Periphery program provides additional funds to recipients of emergency financial relief grants for Israeli citizens with breast and gynecological malignancies from underserved communities and weak populations.

The Empowering the Periphery program arose from the urgent need to provide the extra help needed for patients most affected by the inherent social, economic and healthcare inequities in the towns, villages and communities located in Israel’s periphery.

Why is the Empowering the Periphery Program So Important?

Serious illness is expensive. Research has shown that in six months, a health crisis can force a family into bankruptcy or homelessness. Cancer treatments are long and often cause many extra expenses, (i.e., childcare or household help, transportation to and from doctor appointments and treatments, etc.) However, the primary impact is loss of income due to time off from work. Some patients get to a point where they cannot pay rent and eviction becomes a threat.

These difficulties are ten-fold in under-served populations in rural cities, towns and villages. The objective of the Lemonade Fund’s Empowering the Periphery program is to give help where it is needed most: for patients crushed by the burden of time-consuming travel, high transportation costs and who face the threat of losing their homes. Empowering the Periphery program grants will be used to help cover these costs and overcome inherent inequities in Israel’s periphery communities.

Who is eligible?

Israeli citizens, within one year of diagnosis, with proven financial need, living in the periphery

Grant applications are submitted via hospital and community social workers.

A committee meets once a month to review applications, vetting and verifying applications using a transparent, detailed point system

J. is a divorced 53 year-old new immigrant from Russia. She immigrated with one of her three daughters to escape the war in nearby Ukraine, arriving right before war broke out in Israel on October 7. She was diagnosed with breast cancer soon after. J. speaks almost no Hebrew, suffers from depression and is too weak from treatments to work. With her absorption package ending, a Lemonade Fund grant is helping J. and her daughter meet their most basic household expenses. This is allowing J. to focus on her recovery and begin her new life in Israel.

Empowering the Periphery Program Rationale

Target Population

Israel’s periphery is defined as the Northern regions of the Galilee, upper Galilee and Golan Heights, the Negev region in Israel’s south, and Eilat. Many communities in these areas have disproportionately large numbers of economically and educationally disadvantaged residents, and are home to large minority populations, such as Druze, Israeli Arabs, Beduin, Circassian, new immigrants from Ethiopia, the Former Soviet Union and Ukrainian war refugees.

Demographic Research

The ramifications of these inequities relative to outcomes and cancer care are well-documented in the Trends and Gaps in Morbidity and Mortality from Cancer Within Towns in Israel analysis, published in February 2023 by the Taub Center. This report suggests that Israelis living in the most wealthy localities have a better chance of surviving cancer than those who live in the rest of the country, indicating substantial differences between low to middle-income vs high-income areas.

The analysis suggests that there is “health inequality” related to socioeconomic status and unequal health provision outside central Israel. This stems, in part, from the fact that wealthier populations tend to lead healthier lifestyles with better access to healthcare and better knowledge of how to navigate Israel’s public healthcare systems. A second explanation reflects geographical factors. Israel’s wealthiest locales tend to be clustered in the center of the country, where there is a range of high caliber top medical facilities. In Israel’s periphery there is a much smaller choice of health facilities to choose from, most of which are not research facilities and people need to travel much farther to reach these hospitals and clinics for proper treatment of serious illnesses, like breast cancer and gynecological malignancies. If there are fewer medical professionals and it is difficult for patients to schedule and reach appointments in the periphery, it follows that the rate of earlier detection declines, leaving patients sicker and with lower chances of successfully fighting disease.

Lemonade Fund Experience

The results of this research is inline with the Lemonade Fund’s historical application data. Approximately 90% of the applicants for emergency grants from 2022 to date submitted by social workers for patients in the periphery suffer from late stage disease and cite they are struggling under difficulties related to transport (time and cost). Many report numerous underlying conditions and comorbidities that make their disease even more difficult to treat and manage.

A. 49 year-old Bedouin woman, the second wife of a man 20 years her senior and the mother of several children, turned to the Lemonade Fund for financial assistance for childcare and household expenses, and critical travel expenses to Soroka Hospital in Be’er Sheva, a great distance from her Bedouin settlement, for treatments. She suffers great pain from Stage IV breast cancer and is unable to care for herself or her family, causing severe depression.

“The socioeconomic situation is generally lower in the periphery. The catchment area of Soroka Hospital covers one of the largest geographical areas in the country. That means many patients have to travel by bus for close to three hours round trip for treatments, some of which are given daily for a month. There are no nearby accommodation options or cost-effective transportation for those distances. Also fewer residents in the periphery carry private health insurance making it difficult, if not impossible, to pay for medicines outside the health basket.”
Oncology Institute Social Worker
Soroka University Medical Center, Beer Sheva

Your contribution to the Empowering the Periphery program will go directly toward providing the extra help cancer patients from Israel’s under-served periphery communities need.

When both spouses have cancer… Y., a 50 year old secretary from Haifa, is married with two adult children. Her husband, a machine operator, is currently being treated for lymphoma. In the midst of taking care of him, Y. was diagnosed with breast cancer and now, she, too, is getting chemotherapy. Though their children pitch in, they are having a hard time making ends meet. The Lemonade Fund, an emergency breast cancer financial relief fund, created for just such situations, has awarded them a grant to help them get through this difficult time.
Diagnosed with breast cancer while pregnant… E., a 27 year old immigrant from Mexico discovered a lump while pregnant with her second child. She is now getting chemotherapy even while pregnant. Her husband works as an office cleaner, but he is overwhelmed with the duties of caring for his toddler and his wife at the same time. The Lemonade Fund sent this young family a grant to help them with day to day costs as well as to hire some extra help and we wish E. an easy delivery and a speedy recovery.

No one should have to be very ill and very poor at the same time. If you’re sick, you shouldn’t be worrying about how you can’t afford to put food on the table or pay your electric bill.
The ESRA Lemonade Fund gives one-time emergency financial grants to the neediest breast cancer patients in Israel, so that they can focus on getting well.
It is a simple formula. Donations from you go straight to carefully vetted applicants within a month of approval. Donations are tax deductible.
THE STORY OF A SEPTEMBER 2017 GRANT RECIPIENT:
M., an immigrant from Ethiopia, is a mother of 7 children (the youngest is 9 years old,) from a town near Haifa. Her husband has become visually impaired and can no longer work. M. was a hard worker, supporting her family as a nurses’ aide in a senior citizens home. She was laid off a few months before she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and now she cannot work during a long course of treatment, first chemotherapy, then surgery followed by radiation. The family is getting some disability assistance from the National Insurance Institute, but a grant from the Lemonade Fund will tide this family over until they can get back on their feet.
This is what we do.
M. is one of 11 applicants this month. We are asking for your help.
“If any of your fellow citizens become poor and are unable to support themselves among you, help them as you would a foreigner or a stranger, so that they can continue to LIVE among you.” (Leviticus 25:35)

We at the Lemonade Fund often see how cancer can devastate a family financially in no time. E., a 73 year old Russian immigrant, lives with her unmarried daughter in a small apartment in a development town in the south. Until E. was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer, the salary from the daughter’s factory job supported the two women. Subsequently, E.’s daughter lost so much time from work caring for her mother, accompanying her to doctor appointments and treatments, that the family slid into financial crisis. Despite assistance from Bituach Leumi, (National Health Insurance,) eviction was a possibility. The Lemonade Fund awarded E. a generous grant, and E. and her daughter can breathe again and turn their focus back to E. and her health. We are, as ever, grateful to all of our donors, who help us make this kind of assistance possible.

Friends of the Lemonade Fund:

Been out of touch but very busy! The Lemonade Fund,www.lemonadefund.org, has been helping Israeli women with breast cancer at an increased pace since our last update. The following are profiles of some of the women who have received grants:

O., 37 years old, married with five children, ages 2-14, from the south. Recently diagnosed with breast cancer, O. had to take a leave of absence from her job as a kindergarten teacher while she undergoes chemotherapy. Her husband has had to take significant time off from his job to help care for O. and their children, and they are beginning to have trouble paying their bills. The Lemonade Fund was created to help families such as this; families that are hardworking and solvent, but who are pushed into financial crisis due to serious illness. It is our hope that our grants assist families with these temporary hardships while they recover physically, until they can get back on their feet.

D., 30 years old, separated with two children, ages 2 and 7, from a city in the south. Her disease was diagnosed at an advanced stage and D. is getting chemotherapy to shrink her tumor prior to having surgery to remove it. After this she will need weeks of radiation treatments. Unfortunately, D. has no contact with her extended family and she gets little help from her former husband. She needs extra help and is now in severe financial distress. One of the things most important to D. is that she wants to be sure that her son, who recently started first grade, has enough clothing and books for school. The Lemonade Fund awarded D. a grant and we pray for her recovery.

The Lemonade Fund is also now, thanks to amazing volunteers, supplying home-cooked meals to two single Mom’s in the Sharon area who are having chemotherapy.

We are a simple charity. Money that comes in goes directly to women who have passed the application process. Apologies that we do not have fancy printed material or events, but know that the money that you donate goes straight to our recipients. Breast cancer in Israel is now striking 1 in 7 women. Please help us help these women.

And best wishes for a healthy, meaningful Passover!

Almonds and matzo cake meal make a wonderfully textured crust for this refreshing, citrusy cheesecake. After Passover, instead of pulling out the graham crackers again, experiment with other cookie crusts such as one made with shortbread.

ingredients

For crust

3/4 cup sliced blanched almonds, toasted and cooled

2/3 cup sugar

2/3 cup matzo cake meal

1/4 teaspoon salt

8 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly

slightly

3 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened

3/4 cup sugar

3 large eggs

2 teaspoons grated lemon zest

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Equipment:

Equipment: a 9-inch springform pan

Garnish: julienned lemon zest

preparation

Make crust:
Preheat oven to 350F with rack in middle.
Pulse almonds, sugar, matzo cake meal, and salt in a food processor until finely ground. Transfer to a bowl and stir in butter until combined well. Press onto bottom and 1 inch up side of springform pan. Bake until crust is firm and a shade darker, 12 to 15 minutes. Cool crust completely in pan on a rack.
Make filling and bake cheesecake:
Reduce oven temperature to 300°F.
Beat together cream cheese and sugar in a bowl with an electric mixer at medium speed until smooth, 1 to 2 minutes. Reduce speed to low and add eggs 1 at a time, mixing until incorporated. Mix in zest and vanilla.
Put springform pan in a shallow baking pan and pour filling into cooled crust. Bake until filling is set 1 1/2 inches from edge but center is wobbly, 45 to 50 minutes (filling will continue to set as it cools). Transfer cake in pan to a rack and immediately run a knife around edge, then remove side of pan. Cool completely, 2 to 3 hours.
cooks’ note:Cheesecake can be made 2 days ahead and chilled, loosely covered.

My name is R., and I want to express my deep thanks for your decision to help me financially.at this time.
This grant has helped me enormously to get through this difficult and dark period in my life, in a more optimistic and positive way.Your generousity has been very meaningful to me. Bless you.
With many thanks and blessings,
R.
To the Lemonade Fund:
I want to thank you from the depths of my heart for the financial help that you granted to me. I am very grateful that you considered my request and gave me help. Your grant made it possible for me to pay for rides to examinations, doctor visits and chemotherapy treatments. The help brought me a hopefulness and ease of spirit during this very difficult time.
Thank you very much,
N, (This applicant was referred by a Social Worker who saw N.’s difficulty. Prior to receiving a Lemonade Fund grant, N. had to take several public buses to get to the hospital, a true hardship while undergoing harsh treatments. She applied for a grant to help her specifically with transportation. The Lemonade Fund grant allowed her to pay for private drivers when she needed them.)

The post Two Recent Thank You Letters to the Lemonade Fund from Grant Recipients first appeared on Lemonade Fund.
