H. is a proud, hardworking widow, not accustomed to asking for help despite the difficult life she’s led. She was orphaned at the age of 5 and raised by a string of abusive foster parents. When she was 29, her husband was killed in a car accident, leaving her to raise two young children on her own. She lives alone in a dilapidated, four-story walk-up, and despite mental illness, always continued to support herself and assist her daughter, who was diagnosed with cancer as a young mother. When H. was diagnosed with breast cancer, she became quite ill from the treatments, and needed help, that she could not afford, to manage her household. A Lemonade Fund grant allowed her to have the shopping, cooking and cleaning help she needed while she is so weak.
